VX heavens is a research site on internet virii(/virus) that is great for learning what they are.
You may say that computer virii are malevolent and that it’s a miracle that the site, freely giving out information on them, has survived until now.
But, if you think about it, there are two main arguments for keeping sites like VXHeaven online:
- On one side, it let’s us discover new knowledge, learn new things. Is it better to learn about a virus from a research site like this one or because it infected your computer?
- On the other hand, It’s the whole philosophy of Free Information. If we cannot share one kind of data, and we accept this, Then one day we’ll wake up to a world where freedom of thought and action are inexistent. Where , because we accepted small restrictions which gradually grew bigger, we end up in a world where our thoughts are constantly surveyed.
A third point could also be found in this quote :
What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.
PS: I encourage you to sign the petition on their face-book page 🙂 Freedom to VXHeaven ! 😄
My Warmest Greetings, Peter.
The site has been up and running again for a (long) while now. Recently checked in on this blog (AKA, resuscitated it yet again…) and found that there were a few comments in the queue that seemed to indicate interest in this post quite recently (sadly, one of them linked to strange sites in their username/site, so I just answered their question by mail. The other one seems legit enough, so it gets approved 🙂 ).
Just wanted to update, in case someone reads the post and launches a national petition in Ukraine or something…
Still, check out VXHeaven, I’m still fully behind open access to this kind of – slightly dangerous- information.
